While some objectives were linear, players could use each sandbox-like world to complete whatever objective they pleased.Ĭompleting objectives would net the player power stars, which they could use to open the many locked doors inside Peach’s Castle, functioning as a hub world for each level. Instead, players were encouraged to complete objectives within open levels. Gone were flagpoles and conventional power-ups. New Super Mario Bros.Super Mario 64 marks Mario’s first foray into the 3d realm, and the first time Princess Toadstool’s name was changed to Princess Peach in a mainline title outside of Japan.Star Coin 3: After emerging from the exit pipe leading to the hidden area, Mario must head to the left to find the third Star Coin in a small valley guarded by two Chain Chomps.The second Star Coin is floating above the third one. This pipe leads to a hidden area with several Water Balls. Star Coin 2: Near two ? Blocks and a brick is a green Warp Pipe partially concealed by clouds.Mario must free the nearest Chain Chomp while it is facing to the right to destroy the blocks and collect the Star Coin. Star Coin 1: Right before the Checkpoint Flag, the first Star Coin is blocked off by many bricks. ![]() ![]() The final section contains more Water Balls and Bill Blasters before Mario reaches the pole. There are then several Chain Chomps before more Water Balls Mario must use to cross over while avoiding Bullet Bills. Following three Chain Chomps, Mario reaches the Checkpoint Flag. After a Bill Blaster which rises out from below, Water Balls begin to move differently, with some containing coins. ![]() Mario must use the Water Ball to get up to a high surface, then use two more Water Balls to get across a gap. The middle ? Block contains a Super Mushroom. Mario begins the level near a Chain Chomp, three ? Blocks, two bricks, two coins, and a Water Ball. ![]()
